Sporting an Athletics baseball bag, Barry Zito actually sat in the other Barry's locker room chair, but insists that he has a solid relationship with Bonds. Zito strolled into Scottsdale Arizona ready to begin his first ever Spring Training with the San Francisco Giants. According to the Associated Press, Zito even asked the Giants that he has his locker right next to Bonds'. Even though there is an empty locker separating the two, the Giants had no problem giving Zito 126 million dollars to come to San Francisco, so I don't think moving his locker was going to be an issue. Zito has also been wearing his SF Giants cap the past few weeks when he leaves his house, which is near Los Angeles, so that he can get used to seeing it on himself.
All Pitchers and Catchers were to report to Spring Training earlier this week. Steve Kline, who has been sporting a full beard that he plans to shave once the season begins, was throwing with Zito.
"I was nervous," Kline said. "I thought if I hit him in the kneecap, I'd get released. I talked to him and tried to make him feel welcome. Coming to a new team is always hard. He's a big part of our team."
Kline also had an issue with his locker. He didn't want to move it to Bonds', but above his locker read, Rich Kline, rather than Steve Kline. Obviously someone screwed up because Rich Aurilia's locker is right next to Kline's.
